A bronze figure stands tall against the backdrop of Trieste’s harbor. This is the Josef Ressel Statue a tribute to a brilliant mind.

Josef Ressel was no ordinary man. Born in Bohemia, he became an Austrian forester. He was also an inventor with a passion for innovation.

But what makes Josef Ressel so special that Trieste honors him with a statue? He designed one of the first working ship propellers.

Imagine Trieste in the early 19th century. The city was a vital port for the Austrian Empire. Ressel, working as a forester here from 1821 to 1835, saw an opportunity to improve naval transport.

Ressel wasn’t the first to conceive of a screw propeller. However, he was among the first to make it work. He secured a patent for his propeller in 1827.

In 1829, Ressel equipped a steam-powered boat called Civetta with his propeller. He tested it in Trieste harbor. The Civetta reached six knots. This was a groundbreaking achievement.

However, disaster struck. The steam conduits exploded. The police halted further testing. It wasn’t the propeller’s fault. Yet, many blamed it at the time.

Despite this setback, Ressel’s invention paved the way for modern propeller-driven ships. The SS Great Britain made the first transatlantic journey using a screw propeller in 1845. By the 1880s, propeller design had stabilized. Ressel’s contribution became undeniable.

The city of Trieste has become the city of statues. As the mayor of Trieste said on March 30, 2022, the day the Josef Ressel Statue was erected.

But Ressel’s genius extended beyond propellers. He also invented pneumatic post and ball and cylinder bearings. His innovations touched various fields.

Ressel also contributed to the reforestation of the Karst Plateau near Trieste. His work benefited both industry and the environment.

Josef Ressel died in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 1857.

Standing before the Josef Ressel Statue you’re reminded of the power of innovation. Ressel’s story shows how perseverance and ingenuity can change the world. His statue serves as a reminder of Trieste’s rich history and its connection to maritime innovation.
