Insper’s story began humbly. It started as the Instituto Brasileiro de Mercado de Capitais IBMEC in 1987. Initially, it was located on the corner of Paulista and Brig. Luís Antônio avenues. Back then, Insper only offered an MBA in Finance. Over time, it expanded its curriculum. New programs like the Executive MBA and LL.M. Master in Laws were introduced.
By 1999, Insper launched undergraduate courses in Business Administration and Economics. These courses featured an analytical curriculum and full-time commitment. The first graduating class from the Sāo Paulo unit emerged in 2002. That same year, its Business Administration and Economics programs earned an A rating from the MEC. They ranked third in Brazil and first in Greater Sāo Paulo.
In 2003, Claudio Haddad and his partners took over the institution. In 2004, the Sāo Paulo branch became an independent non-profit. The institution moved to its current campus on Avenida Hélio Pellegrino in Vila Olímpia in 2006.
In 2009, IBMEC was officially renamed Insper. The name change distinguished it from other similarly named institutions. This ensured clarity in the media and among the public.
Insper received AACSB International certification in 2010. This recognized its high standards as a business school. Economist Marcos Lisboa became president in 2015. Claudio Haddad focused on his role as President of the Board. The Financial Times recognized Insper as one of the best business schools worldwide in both 2017 and 2018.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020 Insper quickly adapted. It was the first private Brazilian university to suspend activities and transition to remote learning. Insper produced and distributed 22000 face shields for healthcare workers.
In March 2022, Insper launched its Center for Data Science and AI. The accelerator Foks was launched in September 2022. In February 2023, Marcelo Knobel was announced as the new president of Insper. However, Guilherme Martins assumed the presidency in May 2023.
Insper’s commitment to excellence extends to its facilities. In 2017, Insper opened Toca da Raposa a residential hall for scholarship students. In 2019, a new campus building opened next to the Prédio Claudio Haddad. In August 2024, Insper inaugurated Quatá 67, a renovated building with modern facilities. Also in August 2024, Insper renamed its headquarters the “Claudio Haddad Building”. This honored the institution’s founder.
Today, Insper offers a wide range of courses. These include engineering programs and a doctoral program in Business Economics. In 2021, Insper launched its undergraduate Law and Computer Science courses.
