Amidst the vibrant energy of São Bernardo do Campo stands Estádio 1º de Maio, a stadium steeped in history and echoing with the voices of thousands. Estádio 1º de Maio isn’t just a sporting venue. It’s a symbol of the struggle for workers’ rights, a stage for historic rallies, and a testament to the power of collective action. Inaugurated on August 20, 1968, as Estádio Distrital de Vila Euclides, the stadium initially served as a recreational space for employees of the Elni textile company. The inaugural match saw EC São Bernardo face off against Santos, a game that ended in a 0-2 loss for the home team. However, the stadium’s true significance emerged during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Under the oppressive weight of Brazil’s military dictatorship, strikes were forbidden. Yet, in 1978, Scania employees in São Bernardo do Campo bravely defied the ban, setting off a wave of worker mobilization. Leading the charge was the charismatic union leader, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. With the city’s mayor, Tito Costa, lending his support, Estádio 1º de Maio transformed into a platform for massive worker assemblies. In 1979 and 1980, the stadium pulsated with the energy of over 100,000 workers on strike, demanding fair wages and better working conditions. The rally on May 1, 1980, stands out, drawing an astounding crowd of over 150,000. This pivotal moment solidified the stadium’s place in history and led to its renaming as Estádio 1º de Maio, honoring International Workers’ Day. The stadium has undergone several renovations. Between 1989 and 1996, the stadium saw significant expansion, although not without its challenges. Criticisms arose regarding the unfinished state of the renovations during the reopening match between Santos and Internacional in 1996. A more comprehensive redevelopment took place between 2010 and 2011, boosting its capacity and modernizing its facilities. The stadium witnessed its record attendance on January 30, 2011, during a Campeonato Paulista match between São Bernardo and Corinthians. A crowd of 15,159 watched the thrilling 2-2 tie, etching the day into the stadium’s memory. Today, Estádio 1º de Maio stands as a vibrant hub for football and other events. Its capacity, now regulated at 12,578, continues to draw passionate crowds. Estádio 1º de Maio has been more than a spectator of history. It has been an active participant, a platform for the voices of the working class, and a symbol of resistance. It serves as a potent reminder of the power of unity and the fight for social justice.
