The Eastern Orthodox Church venerates Thomas on multiple days. These days include June 20, June 30 and October 6.

Tradition says Thomas was the only witness to the Assumption of Mary. The other apostles were in Jerusalem. Thomas was in India. After Mary’s burial, Thomas was transported to her tomb. There he saw her bodily assumption into heaven.

Some stories say Thomas landed in India in AD 52. He was martyred near Madras in AD 72. Thomas is believed to have established seven churches in Kerala.

There is a tradition that Thomas visited China. This is found in the Malayalam ballad Thoma Ramban Pattu. It says Thomas went to India. Then he went to China. Finally, he returned to India. He died there.

Syrian Christian tradition says Thomas was killed by a spear in India. His body was buried in Mylapore. Relics of St. Thomas are kept at San Thome Basilica in Mylapore.

In AD 232 some of Thomas’ relics were moved to Edessa. An Indian king sent them. The king is named Mazdai in Syriac sources.

The finger bones of Saint Thomas were discovered in Mosul Iraq in 1964. They were moved to a monastery in 2014.
