Have you heard of a bottle depot transformed into a church? In the heart of São Paulo’s Bom Retiro district stands the Matriz Paroquial Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora. It’s a testament to the Salesians’ vision and the ever-evolving spirit of this vibrant neighborhood. Let’s journey back to 1914. The Archbishop of São Paulo, Dom Duarte Leopoldo e Silva, entrusted the Salesians with a mission: establish a new parish in Bom Retiro. This parish, dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians, would soon become the magnificent Matriz Paroquial Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora we see today. Initially, there was no church building. Parishioners held baptisms and weddings at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Sanctuary. This continued until 1918, when a makeshift chapel opened its doors. This humble structure, a former bottle depot, served as a temporary place of worship. It stood on the very ground where the Matriz Paroquial Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora now graces the cityscape. The first vicar, Father Domingos Minguzzi, tirelessly served his sprawling parish. He visited the sick, comforted the needy, and worked relentlessly to build a true spiritual home for his community. The Salesians, understanding the needs of the growing community, envisioned a school alongside the church. They believed education, especially vocational training, was vital for the working-class youth of Bom Retiro. Land was secured, thanks to Father Minguzzi’s persistence and the city’s generosity. This land would house both the Matriz Paroquial Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora and the Instituto Dom Bosco. This marked the second Salesian foundation in São Paulo, the first being the Liceu Coração de Jesus, founded in 1885. Construction of the Matriz Paroquial Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora began in 1923. A mere ten years later, even before its full completion, the church began serving the community. Primarily Italian immigrants filled the pews of this grand new sanctuary. The church’s story mirrors the changing demographics of Bom Retiro. The arrival of Jewish, Armenian, Italian, Polish, Korean, and Latin American communities transformed the area. This influx created a melting pot of cultures and faiths. The Matriz Paroquial Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora adapted to serve this diverse population. Today, the church continues to be a beacon of faith and community. It hosts masses not only in Portuguese, but also in Spanish and Polish, reflecting the linguistic tapestry of its parishioners.
