The name Kanaan itself is fascinating. It first appeared in the 1730s. It came from an old farmstead that once stood here. Imagine life on that farmstead centuries ago. Then in the late 1700s a summer pleasure house was built. It later became a tavern. This tavern was demolished in 1881. “The Snuff King” Knut Ljunglöf then built a house. Since 1952 this house has been Kanaan Café.
Kanaanbadet is a popular destination for residents of the surrounding areas. Blackeberg Råcksta Vallingby Grimsta Hässleby gård and Hässleby strand all have walking paths leading to the beach. That’s a combined population of 36000 people! It’s often packed on sunny days.
The beach offers more than just swimming. It has wide grassy areas. There’s an asphalt basketball court. You’ll find a beach volleyball court with sand. There’s even a small diving tower. During the summer floating lines mark the boundaries of the swimming area. This is to keep swimmers safe from passing boats and jet skis. A kiosk and café with outdoor seating are available. You can even get drinking water even when the café is closed.
Kanaanbadet has a special place in Stockholm’s history. Sweden’s first youth center opened here in 1933. During World War II it served as a military standby facility for officers. The Kanaan Swimming Association was founded here in 1958. The association is now based in various indoor pools in the western suburbs. From 1935 to 1978 special buses brought Stockholm children from north of Slussen. They came here to enjoy swimming fresh air and free movement. In the 1950s during peak season the beach received about 2000 children aged 5 to 14 each day for six weeks. They got swimming lessons and enjoyed milk and buns for lunch.
