Woodside United Methodist Church

In 1889, the cornerstone of Woodside United Methodist Church was laid. This was a pivotal moment for the small town of Woodside, Delaware. The dedication ceremony, led by Reverend J.S. Willis, took place on June 22, 1890. Woodside United Methodist Church quickly became a central part of the community. It stands prominently on Main Street in this quaint village. The church’s history is intertwined with the development of Woodside itself. The town was established in 1864 as a train depot and shipping point for agricultural goods, especially peaches. The church’s architecture reflects the Late Gothic Revival style. The building measures 50 feet, 4 inches deep by 30 feet, 6 inches wide, featuring a steeply pitched gable roof and a striking bell tower topped with a steepled square belfry. The church underwent a complete renovation in the 1940s, reopening on November 4, 1945. This renovation marked a new chapter in the church’s history. It has served as a place of worship and community gathering for generations. Woodside United Methodist Church also holds a place on the National Register of Historic Places, having been added in 1996. This designation recognizes the church’s architectural and historical significance. Today, Woodside United Methodist Church continues to serve its community with two distinct services: a traditional service at 8:30 AM followed by Sunday School at 9:30 AM and the J.U.M.P. (Joyful United Methodist Praise) service at 10:15 AM. A children’s church is also available during the J.U.M.P. service. The congregation is known for its active involvement in community events. They are particularly famous for making and selling delicious chocolate-covered Easter eggs every spring. The church embodies the spirit of its community, a testament to faith and fellowship.
