Under this concrete dome a universe unfolds. Welcome to the Professor Aristóteles Orsini Planetarium. This isn’t just any planetarium. It’s a time capsule a testament to Brazil’s pioneering spirit in astronomy.

Imagine 1957. Brazil celebrated its 400th anniversary. Professor Aristóteles Orsini had a dream. He wanted a planetarium the first in all of Brazil and Latin America. His vision was bold. His ambition even bolder. He envisioned a place where the wonders of space could inspire generations.

But the path to the stars wasn’t easy. Professor Orsini’s dream began in 1951. A Zeiss projector was ordered. It cost a staggering 3000000 cruzeiros a huge sum back then. The projector arrived in Santos in 1952. Delays plagued the construction. The original metal dome’s cost escalated dramatically due to fluctuating exchange rates. The budget was far exceeded. Ingenious solutions were necessary. José Carlos Figueiredo Ferraz masterfully designed and built a concrete dome. This was a world first a testament to Brazilian ingenuity. The building finally opened on January 26 1957. Professor Orsini’s dream was realized. The Professor Aristóteles Orsini Planetarium was the first in Brazil. It was a source of pride for the city and the nation.

For years countless visitors gazed at the stars projected onto the 18-meter dome. The original Universarium III projector served faithfully. But time takes its toll even on the grandest of visions. Structural problems led to a closure. The planetarium was threatened. Termites infested the wood. The roof leaked. But the spirit of exploration remained strong. A R$9.6 million restoration revitalized the Professor Aristóteles Orsini Planetarium. In 2006 a state-of-the-art Starmaster projector was installed. 44 additional projectors enhanced the experience.

A lightning strike in 2013 caused another setback. The planetarium closed again for repairs. But like a phoenix rising from the ashes it reopened in 2016. It continues to share its cosmic wonders. It remains a beloved institution. It is a reminder that even amidst challenges the pursuit of knowledge remains a guiding light.
