Have you ever wondered what lies behind those imposing brick walls that stand there by the Follingbogatan? Well, this is Bromma Hospital, a place that has seen its share of laughter and tears, triumphs and tragedies. It is a place that once housed thousands of patients but now stands silent, a relic of a bygone era.

Built in 1932, Bromma Hospital was originally conceived as a psychiatric hospital. Its grand, symmetrical design with high-class landscaping was intended to provide a healing environment for a variety of patients facing mental illnesses. This towering hospital was designed in accordance with classic architecture that placed an emphasis on creating a harmonious and ordered atmosphere. The main buildings, which were enclosed by high walls, provided a sense of security, while the lush grounds served as a place for contemplation and recovery.

Inside those walls, countless stories unfolded over the decades. Bromma Hospital was one of Europe’s largest psychiatric hospitals in its heyday, housing as many as 2,000 patients. It was here that many lives were changed, some for the better, some for the worse. But times changed, medical practices evolved, and as the need for large-scale psychiatric institutions declined, Bromma Hospital was forced to close its doors in 1995. This meant the end of an era for the hospital, but also the beginning of a new one, one of regeneration and transformation.

The hospital’s grounds are now being reimagined as a thriving residential community, and now that the once-isolated hospital is part of the urban fabric, it offers a place of connection and shared experiences.

As you stand before Bromma Hospital, try to imagine the stories that unfolded behind those stone walls. Remember, the past is never truly gone, only waiting to be rediscovered, and Bromma Hospital, a place of both healing and change, still has a story to tell.
