From opulent ballroom to intimate pastel portraits, Museo Ca’ Rezzonico unfolds the story of 18th-century Venice. Museo Ca’ Rezzonico stands on the Grand Canal, a testament to Venetian Baroque and Rococo styles. Originally commissioned by the Bon family in the mid-17th century, the palazzo’s construction was a saga of ambition and financial woes. Architect Baldassare Longhena, known for the Santa Maria della Salute church, began the project. However, costs overwhelmed the Bon family. The unfinished palazzo, a decaying testament to unrealized dreams, was eventually purchased in 1750 by Giambattista Rezzonico. He tasked Giorgio Massari, a prominent architect of the era, with completing the project. Massari respected Longhena’s original vision but infused it with the lighter touch of Rococo sensibilities. Slender pillars replaced heavy columns, oval windows brought in more light, and a grand ballroom was created at the back of the building, defying Venetian tradition. The Rezzonicos’ ascent was swift. In 1758, Carlo Rezzonico became Pope Clement XIII. To celebrate, Giambattista commissioned Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, the celebrated Venetian painter, to adorn the palazzo’s ceilings with frescoes. The “Nuptial Allegory” fresco, commemorating Ludovico Rezzonico’s marriage, is a masterpiece created in just twelve days. The ballroom’s ceiling, by Giovanni Battista Crosato, depicts Apollo’s chariot journeying between continents. Trompe-l’œil artistry by Girolamo Mengozzi Colonna enhances the grandeur of both rooms. Museo Ca’ Rezzonico is more than just architecture. It’s a journey through 18th-century Venetian life. The Salon of Pastels showcases portraits by Rosalba Carriera, capturing the era’s fashionable pastel technique. The Tapestry Hall boasts Flemish tapestries and vibrant frescoes. The Throne Room, used by Pope Pius VI in 1778, displays Tiepolo’s “Allegory of Merit.” On the second floor, Canaletto’s early Venetian scenes and works by Francesco Guardi offer glimpses of the city’s vibrant life. Frescoes from the Tiepolo family’s Villa Zianigo, including Giandomenico Tiepolo’s whimsical Pulcinella series and the “New World” fresco, add a touch of humor and social commentary. The third floor houses the Egidio Martini collection, spanning centuries of Venetian art, and a reconstructed 18th-century pharmacy, a fascinating glimpse into the era’s medical practices. Museo Ca’ Rezzonico is a time capsule, preserving the grandeur and artistry of a bygone era. From the Rezzonicos’ brief but brilliant reign to the echoes of Browning’s poetry, the palazzo has witnessed history unfold within its walls. It offers a captivating glimpse into the heart of 18th-century Venice.
