Nestled within the leafy embrace of Castle Hill, the Marymount Mercy Centre has witnessed decades of spiritual growth and community connection. The Marymount Mercy Centre first opened its doors in 1965. It was originally purchased in 1958 as a place for young Sisters of Mercy Parramatta to train and grow in their faith. This peaceful sanctuary quickly evolved, becoming a beacon for those seeking spiritual renewal. The Marymount Mercy Centre offered various programs for priests, religious individuals, and laypeople. Over 2,000 people from diverse cultures worldwide found solace and inspiration within its walls, particularly through its New Life Programs. The Sisters of Mercy, who stewarded this special place, have always held a deep commitment to the environment. A testament to their care is the remarkable turpentine-ironbark forest that graces the property. Under their guardianship, this endangered ecological community has tripled in size since 1958, providing a haven for powerful owls, turpentine trees, and countless other native species. The Marymount Mercy Centre closed in 2020, marking the end of an era. However, the Sisters’ legacy lives on. They have taken steps to ensure the forest’s protection in perpetuity. They have proposed gifting the 2.7-hectare forest to Hornsby Shire Council, securing its future for generations to come.
