In 1937, a seed of faith was planted in Santo André. This seed would blossom into the 1ª Igreja Batista de Santo André. Alexandrina Medeiros da Silva and her husband, José da Silva, began holding prayer and Bible study meetings in their home on Travessa Santo Amaro. They were members of the Primeira Igreja Batista do Brás in São Paulo, but felt a calling to establish a Baptist presence in their own community. This small group, initially just a handful of believers, marked the humble beginnings of the 1ª Igreja Batista de Santo André. In 1938, their numbers grew to 17, and they formally established a congregation on Rua Padre Anchieta. The 1ª Igreja Batista de Santo André was officially organized in 1940, during a service held at the Primeira Igreja Batista do Brás. Their first pastor was Ernesto Correa de Araújo. The 1ª Igreja Batista de Santo André initially held services in a rented house. In 1941, they moved to Rua Adolfo Bastos and built their first temple. The construction was swift, fueled by donated materials and volunteer labor. That same year, they formed a choir, the oldest continuously active choir in the ABC region. Seeking to be closer to the train station, the 1ª Igreja Batista de Santo André relocated to Rua São Vicente in 1964. A second temple was built there in 1967. The evangelical movement surged in the Grande ABC region in the 1970s. The 1ª Igreja Batista de Santo André experienced rapid growth. By 1979, under Pastor Edison Queiroz, the second temple was demolished to make way for a larger one. This new temple, capable of holding 1,000 people, opened in 1983. Today, the 1ª Igreja Batista de Santo André, also known as Conexão Primeira, continues to thrive. It has supported missionary work, sending aid and resources to the Amazon region and other parts of the world. The church remains a vibrant testament to the faith of Alexandrina and José, a testament that continues to resonate within the community of Santo André.
