Did you know that \u00c5rstaskolan has two locations? This is the main building on Hjalmarsvagen. But some older students attend class not far from Gullmarsplan.
\u00c5rstaskolan is a municipal school. It serves students from preschool through ninth grade. That is what is meant by F-9 skola. Over 900 students attend \u00c5rstaskolan. About 70 people are employed here. The building itself is owned by Skolfastigheter i Stockholm AB. That is a municipally owned company called SISAB.
The original school building dates back to 1946. Architect Stig \u00c5kermark designed it. A newer section was added in 1963. This addition provided space for six-year-olds and lower grades. \u00c5kermark also designed this addition.
\u00c5rstaskolan uses a special teaching method. It is called the \u00c5rstalektionen. This involves how lessons begin and end. It also involves how material is presented. Classrooms include visual aids. Time Timers help students manage their work. Screens and cushions are also provided.
Every student in grades 1 through 9 gets a digital device. Younger students use iPads. Older students get PCs. In preschool, two students share one iPad. The school also has a well-stocked library.
Younger students use the large schoolyard. The schoolyard has been improved over time. Students helped choose the equipment. Parks and forests surround \u00c5rstaskolan. Teachers use these natural areas for lessons. After school programs also take advantage of them.
The \u00c5rstaskolan has its own kitchen. It focuses on organic ingredients. The school tries to reduce food waste. Vegetarian meals are available daily. The kitchen also introduces new flavors. These challenges are mixed in with familiar dishes.
The after-school program supports student growth. It focuses on knowledge. It focuses on social skills. And it focuses on creativity.

Marko Anderot became headmaster of \u00c5rstaskolan in September. Previously, Kalle Enstrom was headmaster. He is now headmaster at S\u00f6dermalmsskolan.
The grounds of \u00c5rstaskolan cover 21450 square meters. The building is 11023 square meters. Buses from \u00c5rstaberg and Gullmarsplan stop near the school.
