Can a school transcend its intended purpose? Colégio São Francisco Xavier stands as proof that it can. Founded in 1928 by Father Guido Del Toro, Colégio São Francisco Xavier initially served Japanese immigrants and their descendants. Father Del Toro, witnessing the influx of Japanese families into Brazil, felt a calling. He aimed to provide education and spiritual guidance to these newcomers in São Paulo’s Liberdade district. The school was first known as the Collegio Catholico Japonez São Francisco Xavier. The original location was a gift, a plot of land donated by Count José Vicente de Azevedo. In 1931, Colégio São Francisco Xavier moved to its current home in the Ipiranga district. This location places it near historical and natural landmarks, including the Ipiranga Museum and the USP Zoology Museum. The move also signaled a shift in the school’s mission. It opened its doors to students of all backgrounds, regardless of creed, race, or nationality. Over the years, Colégio São Francisco Xavier, affectionately nicknamed “Sanfra”, has educated generations of students. The school has undergone renovations. Its 12,500 square meter campus now boasts modern facilities. These include sports courts, laboratories, a Maker space, and a technologically equipped library with over 10,000 titles. Colégio São Francisco Xavier also has access to the Chácara Recanto Anchieta. This 55,000 square meter green space provides opportunities for recreational activities and educational programs. From its humble beginnings as a haven for Japanese immigrants, Colégio São Francisco Xavier has evolved. It has become a testament to the power of education and inclusivity in the heart of São Paulo. Its story reminds us that institutions can adapt and grow, serving a broader purpose than initially envisioned.
