High above the Cape Flats looms Constantiaberg. Its whale-backed silhouette dominates the landscape. This majestic mountain is part of the Cape Peninsula’s mountainous spine. It’s a stunning landmark within Table Mountain National Park.

Constantiaberg’s height is 927 meters. That’s quite impressive. It’s one of the highest peaks in the range extending from Table Mountain to Cape Point. This range consists of resistant Table Mountain Group sandstones. The sandstones form the dramatic backdrop to Cape Town’s southern suburbs. They rise sharply from the Cape Flats.

The eastern slopes of Constantiaberg are mostly covered in commercial pine and gum plantations. These are part of the Tokai forest. A network of hiking trails crisscrosses the area. Gravel roads are used for harvesting timber. The forest is a popular spot for walking running and mountain biking. From the western slopes you can gaze upon the breathtaking beauty of Hout Bay.

A tarred road leads to the summit. There sits an important VHF mast. It’s about 100 meters high and visible for roughly 80 kilometers. Built in the 1960s it transmits signals for local television and radio channels. It also supports cellular networks. The South African Weather Service also uses the summit. They have a radar installation up there.

Constantiaberg is rich in biodiversity. It’s home to many bird and plant species. The mountain is largely covered in fynbos. Fynbos is a unique botanical biome native to the Western Cape. The specific vegetation is Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos. This is an endangered type of vegetation. It’s endemic to Cape Town. You won’t find it anywhere else in the world.

Elephant’s Eye cave is another significant feature. It’s a popular hiking destination. Viewed from the Cape Flats the mountain’s eastern profile resembles an elephant. The range continuing towards Cape Point forms the trunk. That’s how it got its unique name. Constantiaberg is truly a remarkable place. A place where nature history and modern technology meet. It’s a mountain with a story to tell. A story that unfolds with each hike and each breathtaking view.
