In 1881, a seed was planted. Not a literal seed, but the seed of a community. This seed was the Church of England Parish of Summer Hill, now known as Summer Hill Church. It was established by Reverend John Vaughan, the first Rector. Summer Hill Church stands before us as a testament to his vision. The magnificent structure we see today wasn’t built overnight. The foundation stone was laid in 1883. Construction continued for over two decades, finally reaching completion in 1906. This rapid construction was unusual for the time. It spoke to the affluence of the Summer Hill area in the late 19th century. Designed by architect Alexander Leckie Elphinstone Junior, Summer Hill Church embodies the neo-Gothic architectural style. Its impressive stone architecture and striking wooden beams are truly remarkable. The church boasts three distinctive internal arches, a defining feature of Elphinstone’s design. Inside, the adjoining church hall can accommodate up to 80 guests. It’s a beautiful space for intimate gatherings. Two smaller meeting rooms provide additional space for smaller groups of up to 30 people. Summer Hill Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It played a significant role in the local community. Originally built for the Church of England, it transitioned to become the Anglican Church we know today, known as St. Andrew’s Summer Hill. The church stands on the traditional lands of the Wangal and Cadigal people. It serves as a reminder of the rich history that intertwines with the story of Summer Hill Church.
