Crushed, impaled, and yet, strangely captivating. This is Brouk, David Černý’s colossal sculpture of a Porsche 911. Brouk, meaning “beetle” in Czech, isn’t your typical art installation. It’s a statement, a commentary on society’s obsession with cars. Brouk stands as a mangled monument to this obsession, a symbol of consumerism taken to an extreme. The Brouk Installation is located near the BB Centrum Alpha office building in Prague 4. This crumpled Porsche 911 is impaled on a massive pin, much like an insect specimen in a collector’s case. David Černý deliberately placed Brouk near a highway, further emphasizing his message about car culture. The sculpture itself is enormous, almost 17 meters high, 8 meters long, and 3.5 meters wide. It’s constructed from eleven hydraulically controlled discs. These discs contribute to the crumpled, insect-like appearance of the Porsche. Brouk isn’t just about criticizing car culture. It also represents Černý’s own complex relationship with the Porsche 911, a car he both loves and critiques. This duality makes Brouk a fascinating and thought-provoking piece. It challenges viewers to consider their own relationships with cars and consumerism. It’s a jarring sight, this wrecked Porsche, a symbol of both destruction and strange beauty. Brouk leaves a lasting impression, prompting reflection on our modern world’s values and obsessions.
