Flash flooding regularly threatened homes.
Then came Hurricane Hazel in 1954. The storm caused devastating damage. It forced the removal of many homes in the flood-prone area. The decision was made to prevent future development in this vulnerable area. Public ownership of the floodplain land was established. This cleared the way for the creation of parkland.
Over time nature reclaimed the land. Wildlife returned. In 1994 over 5000 white pine trees were planted by the Boy Scouts of Canada. Today Morningside Park boasts a high degree of urban wilderness.
