Could a club be magical, even with a bad sound system and worse bartenders? Here at the Pratersauna, it seems that was part of the charm. This legendary Viennese nightclub, nestled in the Prater park, wasn’t just a place to dance. It was a moment in time, an era for those seeking refuge from a stagnant nightlife. Born from the ashes of ‘Wurstsalon’ parties, the Pratersauna opened its doors in 2009, a phoenix rising from a former sauna and swinger club. The name stuck, as did some of the interior. Imagine dancing next to the cold plunge pools of the old sauna, remnants of its steamy past! Over the years, the Pratersauna grew, encompassing four floors and a garden, yet it clung to its charmingly run-down aesthetic. It became a haven for those craving the freedom of Berlin techno, with after-hours parties stretching into the daylight. The Pratersauna’s reign wasn’t without its challenges. The influx of a younger crowd and the arrival of the Vienna University of Economics and Business next door shifted its dynamic. Yet, even as it closed its doors in 2016, the Pratersauna left an indelible mark on Vienna’s nightlife. Those who experienced its heyday still speak of it with a wistful smile, remembering the hugs from sweaty strangers and the feeling of being part of something special. The Pratersauna may be gone, but its legend, much like the faint scent of chlorine lingering in the air, remains.
