“Remember them” is the inscription. This Pamięci Żołnierzy Batalionu AK Zośka Plaque stands as a testament to courage and sacrifice.
The Batalion Zośka was a unit of the Armia Krajowa. Armia Krajowa means Home Army. It consisted mainly of members of the Szare Szeregi. Szare Szeregi means the underground Scouting organization. Ryszard Białous “Jerzy” commanded the battalion.
Formed in August 1943 the battalion was named “Zośka”. It commemorated Tadeusz Zawadzki “Zośka”. Zawadzki was the commander of the Warsaw Assault Groups. He died in action at Sieczychy.
The battalion consisted largely of officer cadets. Zośka soldiers participated in sabotage actions. They aimed to disrupt Wehrmacht railway transports. These transports supplied the Eastern Front.
During the Warsaw Uprising the Zośka battalion fought in the Radosław group. They fought in Wola and the Old Town. Andrzej Romocki “Morro” led the Rudy company. It broke through German lines into the city center. This was through the Saxon Garden.
After capturing two Panther tanks the battalion formed a tank platoon. This was in the Okopowa Street area. Wacław Micuta “Wacek” commanded the platoon.
The AK command recognized the Rudy company as the best. This was among the 40000 soldiers in the Warsaw Uprising. They captured the Gęsiówka concentration camp. The High Commander awarded the Zośka battalion the Silver Cross of the Virtuti Militari. This was for their fighting in the Warsaw Uprising.
After 1945 the communist system persecuted Zośka members. Many were imprisoned. They were accused of conspiring against the communist regime.
The grave of the Zośka battalion is at the Powązki Military Cemetery. It is cared for by the Committee for the Care of Soldiers’ Graves. Władysław Findeisen initiated the committee in 1988.
The Jednostka Wojskowa Komandosów continues the Zośka battalion traditions. It is located in Lubliniec.
