The Art Glass Center at Glen Echo is a unique place. It serves the Washington metropolitan area as a school, a resource center, and a gallery. It began as a small teaching space over 40 years ago. Now, it is a spacious studio and light-filled gallery. The Art Glass Center was one of the first organizations to join the National Park Service’s unique enclave. It is home to visual and performing arts groups in the historic Glen Echo amusement park.
Step inside. You will discover a world where glass transforms into breathtaking art. The center is run by dedicated artists-in-residence. They are passionate about both teaching and creating. These artists, along with other faculty members, offer a variety of classes. They teach everything from the basics of kiln-formed glass to master classes for advanced students. Classes include fusing, kiln casting, mosaics, jewelry, and Venetian glass bead making.
What exactly is fused glass? It is unlike blown or stained glass. Fused glass involves melting two or more pieces of glass together in a kiln. The shaping also happens in a kiln. This relatively simple procedure allows artists to create diverse pieces. These range from simple designs to structurally complex art. Think wall hangings, vessels, jewelry, and sculptures.
