Did you know that the Faculty of Engineering here at the National University of Laos grew from humble beginnings? Established in 1995 it was initially known as the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. The NUOL is the only national university in Laos.

Picture this it’s 1995 and Laos is on the cusp of significant development. The government recognized the need for skilled engineers. Thus the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture was born as one of the original 11 faculties of the National University of Laos. This happened according to Prime Minister’s Decree No 50/Nya/95.
This new faculty wasn’t built from scratch. It was created by combining five existing higher education institutions. These included the 2 December University the Higher School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering the Higher School of Transportation the Higher School of Construction and the Higher Tat Thong Irrigation School. Each brought its own unique expertise.
In 2004 the Faculty of Architecture became its own separate entity. The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture was renamed the Faculty of Engineering FEN. Despite this change the Faculty of Engineering continued to expand. Today it is the largest faculty within the university.
The Faculty of Engineering plays a crucial role. It contributes significantly to the Lao society and economy. Every year about 1054 students graduate. Many alumni have become successful engineers. They significantly contribute to the nation.
The Faculty of Engineering is not just about theory. The faculty provides students with practical knowledge. Students gain awareness of social and environmental issues. These are very important for their society.
The Faculty of Engineering is located on Lao-Thai Friendship Road in Sokpaluang Village. It is part of the multi-campus structure of NUOL. NUOL has five campuses. These are Dongdok campus Sokpaluang campus Nabong campus Donnokkhum campus and Tadthong campus.
NUOL also plays 4 roles. It provides higher education. It performs research in natural and social sciences. NUOL preserves the arts culture and traditions of Laos. And it provides academic services to society.
The National University of Laos also consists of 13 faculties. These include the Faculty of Forestry the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Social Sciences. It also contains the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Letters. You can also find the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration here. As well as the Faculty of Agriculture. Also part of the university is the Faculty of Laws and Political Sciences the Faculty of Architecture the Faculty of Environmental Sciences the Faculty of Sport Science and Physical Education and the Faculty of Water Resources.
The National University of Laos is a member of several organizations. These include the ASEAN University Network AUN and the Greater Mekong Sub-region Academic and Research Network GMSARN.
