Agricola Finnish Lutheran Church provides a spiritual home for many. It welcomes people from all ethnic backgrounds. Pastor John Saarinen guided the founding of the Agricola Finnish Lutheran Congregation. Early members met in various locations. They saved until they could build this church. Construction finished in 1967.

Notice the sanctuary’s simple beauty. Cedar and fir create a calming space. The acoustics are excellent. The sanctuary can hold 300 worshippers. A new wing was added in 1982. This addition provided more space. It allowed for Sunday School a nursery office space and a meeting hall.

Agricola Finnish Lutheran Church is more than just a church. It’s a community hub. Many Finnish groups meet here. These include Vox Finlandiae Toronto Finnish Male Singers and Sisu Folk Dancers. The church is named after Mikael Agricola. He was born in Finland around 1510. He showed great talent as a scholar and linguist. Mikael developed the Finnish written language. He translated the New Testament into Finnish in 1548. This was his most important achievement. Because of this he is known as the father of the Finnish language. He became the first Lutheran bishop of Finland in 1584. The founders named Agricola Finnish Lutheran Church to honor their heritage.

Today Agricola Finnish Lutheran Church continues to serve its community. Services accommodate a wide range of communities. They are held in Finnish English Swedish and Estonian. The church’s mission statement reflects its welcoming spirit. It aims to connect everyone with God’s Grace and Love.

The church faces challenges. Religious affiliation has declined in Canada. The congregation has gotten smaller. To cover costs the church rents out its space during the week. Despite these challenges the community remains strong.

Hilkka Luus the chair of the church council shared her thoughts. She noted that some original members are gone. However new faces appear all the time. The smaller size allows her to feel close to everyone. The church makes sure everyone feels welcome.

Pastor Matti Kormano leads the congregation. He knows most members by name. He values loyal members over large crowds.
