Deep within Shinagawa a sanctuary stands. That sanctuary is Maruyama Temple. It echoes with the whispers of Nichiren Buddhism.

Maruyama Temple is not just a temple. It is a testament to faith and history. Established in 1928 as Maruyama Church it was the vision of two remarkable individuals. The temple’s story began with the dedication of Nisshu Shonin of Jogyo-in Temple. It also began with the founding of Ryugenin Nichigen.

Let’s turn back time. Picture Tokyo in the early 20th century. Japan was changing fast. Yet, amidst this change the desire for spiritual solace remained constant. Myoichi Shuni of Josho-in Temple recognized this need. Nichigen of Ryugenin also recognized this need. Together they laid the foundation for what would become Maruyama Temple.

In 1928 Maruyama Church was officially established. This was a significant milestone. It marked the beginning of the temple’s journey as a place of worship and community.

Later in 1928 the church received official recognition. It was then known as Maruyama Church. In 1933 the church moved to its current location from Shimmei. This relocation marked a new chapter for the temple. In 1948 the main hall was constructed.

Over the years Maruyama Temple evolved. It became a vital spiritual anchor for the community. In 1989 the temple was officially renamed Maruyama Temple. This solidified its status as a Buddhist temple.

Today Maruyama Temple continues to serve. It welcomes all seeking spiritual guidance. The main deity is Dai-Mandara. The temple is affiliated with the Nichiren sect. It stands as a beacon of faith.

As you stand here take a moment. Reflect on the journey of Maruyama Temple. Think about Myoichi Shuni and Nichigen’s vision. Their dedication shaped this sacred ground. Feel the enduring spirit of Nichiren Buddhism. It permeates every corner of this temple. Maruyama Temple connects the past with the present.
