What if these walls could talk? Cascina Brunero whispers tales from centuries past. It stands as a testament to Turin’s rich history. This seemingly simple farmhouse holds secrets of sieges and society.
Cascina Brunero likely dates back to the 17th century. It’s also known as Cascina Bruné. In the early 20th century, it was transformed into a residential building. Yet, it still retains its original rustic charm even after its latest renovation.
The cascina is clearly visible on maps of the Siege of Turin in 1706. Back then, it was known as “Pietro Brunero”. During the siege, French forces occupied Cascina Brunero. It was positioned along the countervallation line. This line connected Regio Parco, Cascina Gioia, Cascina Benso, Cascina Violino, Cascina Marchesa and Cascina Scaravella.
In 1790, Grossi described “Il Bruné” as a farmhouse. It had an old building owned by Avvocato Bruné. He was a member of ten civic members. The farmhouse also had a large garden. It included a beautiful chapel. The chapel’s bell sat atop a large dovecote. This dovecote was part of the building. It stood to the right of the road to Chivasso. It was also to the left of the road to the Abbazia di Stura. It was near Gioia, about one and a half miles from Turin.
Grossi noted that Abbate di Demonte lived opposite the entrance to the Cittadella. He lived on the Isola di San Matteo.
In 1820, the Catasto Gatti declared Gaspare Borla as the owner. He owned about 16 hectares of land. Later, in 1836, Francesco Gallizio acquired it. The property underwent several inheritances and divisions. In the early 20th century, it lost its agricultural function. It passed to the Pelassa family. They owned it until the 2004 renovation.
The chapel that Grossi mentioned was a Baroque building. It stood on Via Paisiello, once known as Strada della Campagnetta. Old photos show this chapel. Sadly, it was demolished in 1968. A low building now stands in its place. It houses several shops.
