Wondering where the largest town park in the New Territories is located? It is right here. This is Tuen Mun Park. Welcome to a place where relaxation and recreation blend seamlessly with the vibrant energy of Tuen Mun.

Tuen Mun Park was opened in 1985. Later phases opened in 1988 and 1991. It is the largest park in the New Territories. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department operates it.

Imagine this: before this park existed, this land was under the sea. It was part of Castle Peak Bay. In the 1970s, the area was reclaimed. Before the park’s construction, it served as a temporary housing area.

Tuen Mun Park covers 12.5 hectares. That is about 31 acres. The park sits between the Tuen Mun River and Tuen Mun Town Centre. It is conveniently located near the Tuen Mun Town Plaza. The Tuen Mun Public Library and Tuen Mun Town Hall are also nearby. The park is next to the Tuen Mun station. Also, the Light Rail Town Centre stop is very close.

Tuen Mun Park offers a wide array of facilities. These include an amphitheater and an artificial lake. You will also find badminton and volleyball courts. Grab a snack at the canteen. Children can enjoy the playground. There is even a model boat pool and a roller skating rink. Do not miss the water cascade.

One of the park’s major attractions is the Reptile House. It opened in 1999. It was one of the first of its kind. The Reptile House has indoor and courtyard terrariums. Various reptile species are displayed here. See a bearded dragon. Observe a Cuban anole. Marvel at a boa constrictor. Spot a veiled chameleon. There are actually 20 species in 43 live exhibits. It attracts around 400000 visitors annually.

Tuen Mun Park faced challenges related to noise. Musicians performing in the park caused disturbances. Neighbors complained about the noise. Others defended the singers. In 2006, the LCSD proposed designated singing areas. Amplification was not allowed. Singing groups protested that singing without amplification was like cooking without salt. Nearby residents still complained.

The LCSD then established a performance stage. They also created two self-entertainment zones. These were farther from residential blocks. However, complaints continued.

In 2019, protests arose concerning scantily clad dancing aunties singing in Mandarin. They were accused of begging and prostitution. Protesters demanded a quiet park. The Tuen Mun District Council voted to discontinue the self-entertainment zones.

Tuen Mun Park is easily accessible. Take Exit B of the Tuen Mun station. It is the terminus of the Tuen Ma line. Or use the Light Rail. There is also a bus terminus at Tuen Mun Town Centre.

Tuen Mun Park stands as a testament to transformation. It changed from reclaimed land to a vibrant community space. It offers something for everyone. Enjoy the blend of nature, recreation, and culture here at Tuen Mun Park.
