A sanctuary of glass and concrete. That’s the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC. This isn’t just any church. This is a place built on a foundation of acceptance and resilience.

The Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC or MCCDC wasn’t always here on Ridge Street. It began in 1970 as the Community Church of Washington DC. It was founded by a group of LGBTQ people. They sought a space where they could worship freely. A safe haven. They needed a place to gather as LGBTQ individuals and as LGBT Christians. Most churches at the time didn’t welcome them.

The early years were challenging. Services were held in homes. In other church buildings. Even a converted rowhouse. Imagine the dedication. Imagine the faith. The AIDS epidemic greatly impacted this congregation. MCCDC became a beacon of hope. Offering support. Providing funerals for those the larger community shunned. The church’s role in caring for people affected by AIDS was paramount.

After over twenty years of searching. MCCDC built a new sanctuary. This dedication happened in 1992. It’s significant because it was the first new sanctuary constructed in the US by an LGBT religious organization. The architectural design is striking. Modernist. With vaulted glass ceilings. It’s a testament to their perseverance. Their strength.

The building itself is a work of art. Designed by Suzane Reatig. She incorporated innovative design. Like using unfastened seating. This clever trick allowed for a larger sanctuary. It lessened parking requirements. The building itself shows how faith can inspire beauty and innovation.

The Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC has experienced growth and challenges. It’s a story of survival. Of inclusivity. Of faith’s enduring power. It’s a story about a community finding its voice. Finding its place. Finding God. A story worth remembering. A story that continues to unfold. A church that welcomes all. Remember that. The spirit of this church is strong. It lives on. It’s a building you should visit. A story you should know.
