“Tapfer und Treu” brave and loyal the inscription proudly declared. Those words once adorned a majestic monument a Kriegerdenkmal in Trier. It stood tall a testament to the sacrifices of World War I.
The Kriegerdenkmal was more than just a memorial. It was a symbol of Trier’s resilience its collective memory. In 1929 the city held a design competition. Thirty entries flooded in. Architect Nobis from Saarbrücken won. His design a half-circle structure nestled into the Moseldammes embankment was deemed a masterpiece. A central pillar rose towards the Mosel River. Saint George the dragon slayer stood atop it. A courtyard flanked by memorial stones for Trier’s regiments completed the scene. The judges praised its harmonious blend of architecture and landscape. The Hospital. The Mariensäule. The Mosel promenade. All were beautifully integrated.
The official inauguration was on July 5 1930. But individual regiments held their own commemorative ceremonies. The 7th Rhine Infantry Regiment for instance celebrated on October 5 1930. They marched from the Palastplatz to the new Kriegerdenkmal. Wreaths were laid. Stones were consecrated.
Unfortunately the Kriegerdenkmal’s triumph was short-lived. Construction flaws emerged. The foundation proved inadequate. Cracks appeared. The structure’s stability was threatened. Public opinion was divided on its artistic merit. Saint George the magnificent statue was melted down during World War II. The cracks worsened. The once magnificent Kriegerdenkmal lasted only fifteen years. It was demolished in 1945.
Only the regimental memorial stones remain. They were relocated to Trier’s main cemetery in 1964. They now stand as silent witnesses to a lost monument a lost era. Their inscriptions still tell a tale. Of the fallen soldiers of World War I. The 2723 of the Reserve Infantry Regiment Nr 237. The 127 of the Jäger Regiment zu Pferde Nr 8.
