Tucked away in the Liesing district, Friedhof Liesing whispers tales of Vienna’s past. Established in 1863, Friedhof Liesing isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a sprawling 32,543 square meters of history, dotted with over 3,200 graves. Originally intended to serve the local community, Friedhof Liesing became the main cemetery for the 23rd district in 1954. This quiet sanctuary offers a poignant glimpse into the lives of those who shaped this part of Vienna. Wander through the grounds and discover the final resting place of Joseph von Kurzböck, a prominent bookseller who once held the title of Liesing’s lord of the manor. His gravestone, a relic from the old village cemetery, stands as a testament to the area’s rich history. Friedhof Liesing also houses a baroque crucifix, originally erected in the old cemetery in 1784 and later moved to its current location. It’s believed that the Dorotheerkloster, which held dominion over Liesing since the 15th century, crafted this beautiful piece. The cemetery’s artistic heritage continues with the mausoleum of Theodor Löwenthal, a stunning example of early neo-Gothic architecture. Built around 1865, this centerpiece has been recognized by the city of Vienna as an essential cultural landmark and was meticulously restored in 2020. Amidst the serene landscape, you’ll encounter Rudolf Schmidt’s “Mourning Mother with Child,” a poignant war memorial that originally graced the old town hall bridge over the Liesingbach. Friedhof Liesing also remembers those who fought against National Socialism, with a memorial dedicated to resistance fighters Franz Heindl and Viktor Mrnustik. Friedhof Liesing’s architect, Erich Boltenstern, redesigned the mortuary in 1969. The redesigned space features a striking altar mosaic by Hermann Bauch, a cross adorned with symbols of the sun, moon, beginning, and end. Friedhof Liesing is more than a resting place. It’s a living tapestry of stories, woven into the fabric of Vienna.
