Cornwell notes that gunshot violence in America overwhelmingly affects young men of color. They are rarely over 40. As a trauma surgeon he witnessed the cycle of violence firsthand.
His father also graduated from Howard University School of Medicine in 1954. His wife graduated in 1986. Before returning to D.C., Cornwell was Chief of Trauma at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for 10 years.
National news covered Baltimore’s high homicide rates. Cornwell showed urban youth the consequences of gun violence. He walked them through the trauma unit at Johns Hopkins. He hoped to cut and ultimately end the violence.
Hampton found Cornwell to be an absolutely fascinating human being. He knew he had to create a documentary about his life.
