Since 1862 Calvary Baptist Church has been a congregation committed to living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the heart of Washington D.C. Calvary Baptist Church has a long history of mission outreach and partnership programs in the community.

Calvary Baptist Church’s story is intertwined with the very fabric of Washington D.C. Adolf Cluss a German-born architect designed the sanctuary building. Cluss also designed many other leading buildings in Washington D.C. Joseph Wildrich von Kammerhueber a Bavarian was Cluss’s partner on the design and construction.

Imagine the dedication on June 3 1866. But disaster struck during a blizzard in December 1867. A fire gutted the still-new building due to a faulty heating system possibly a failed innovation by Adolf Cluss. Reconstruction began almost immediately. The current building was occupied in the winter of 1868 and dedicated in July 1869.

Over the years Calvary Baptist Church has seen many changes. A major storm weakened the spire on July 30 1914 and it was removed. The steeple was restored to the neighborhood skyline in February 2005. The interior has also been extensively changed. Balconies were added on the north and south sides. A large set of organ pipes now obscures a small rose window.

Calvary Baptist Church is the founding church of the American Baptist Convention. It works cooperatively with several national progressive Baptist groups. Locally Calvary Baptist Church is a member of the District of Columbia Baptist Convention.

Calvary Baptist Church has been a place of leadership and influence. Clarence Cranford was once pastor. Brooks Hays a former member of Congress was a member.

Calvary Baptist Church concentrated on its relationship with the Latino population. It introduced bilingual services and partnered with a church in El Salvador. Calvary Baptist Church has been active in immigration reform efforts and marriage equality.

In 1983 Calvary Baptist Church founded the Calvary Women’s Shelter. It was the first women’s homeless shelter in the Washington metropolitan area.

Today Calvary Baptist Church continues to be a vibrant community. Weekly worship is held at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. Spanish translation is available during worship. Small groups meet during the week. Many programs have transitioned to online forums during the pandemic.
