Gazing up at Arigata Yama, can you sense the echoes of whispered prayers? This unassuming hillside in Tokyo’s Edogawa City, also known as Arigata Yama Stone Buddha Group, holds a fascinating and somewhat peculiar history. Arigata Yama became a sanctuary for discarded stone Buddhas and other religious artifacts between 1940 and 1943. Driven by a mix of ideology and practicality, a group called Nichiyo-kai gathered these abandoned relics from the surrounding area. They placed them here on Arigata Yama for safekeeping.

The Nichiyo-kai, who still maintain facilities near the Arigata Yama stone Buddhas, established a poignant resting place. The statues, once scattered and forgotten, found a new home on this hillside. They stand as silent witnesses to a tumultuous period in Japanese history. The hill itself has ties to Myokenji Temple, further intertwining Arigata Yama with religious history.

Arigata Yama houses over 4,000 stone figures. Among them, you’ll find monuments relocated from prominent families and temples. The last feudal lord of Fukagawa Domain, the Shinmei-ji Temple, and a branch of the Matsudaira clan all have a presence here on Arigata Yama. Even a monument dedicated to the father of Takeaki Enomoto, a key figure in the final days of the shogunate, rests among the stones of Arigata Yama.

Arigata Yama has become a popular location for period dramas and other filming. Its unique atmosphere and proximity to former Toei Uzumasa Studios made it an ideal setting. This added another layer of intrigue to Arigata Yama’s story. Imagine actors in samurai garb, their swords clashing, against the backdrop of these weathered stone figures. The scene blends fiction with the quiet reality of Arigata Yama’s historical significance.

However, Arigata Yama faces an uncertain future. Development plans threaten to encroach upon this tranquil space. The construction of TOKYO GIANTS TOWN casts a long shadow. The very ground beneath these ancient statues is slated for redevelopment. While some areas, including part of Arigata Yama, are designated for religious use and parkland, the future of the entire stone Buddha group remains uncertain. As you stand here, contemplating these silent figures, remember that Arigata Yama is more than just a collection of stones. It’s a testament to resilience, a sanctuary of forgotten faith, and a tangible link to Tokyo’s rich and complex past.
