“What began with just a handful of pioneers has blossomed into a beacon of faith.” Right here at 1655 Wilson Avenue stands West Toronto Church of God. Its story is one of humble beginnings and unwavering dedication.
In the spring of 1968 Rev. Clifford MacDonald and Ena MacDonald journeyed from England to Canada. They came to begin pastoral work. Bishop C. Chapin oversaw their mission. The MacDonalds, along with five other members, pioneered West Toronto Church of God. Those first members were Sis. Violet Burey, Sis. Jennifer Martin, Sis. Morales, and Bro. & Sis Loney.
The church started with merely a few people. It grew quickly. By June 30, 1968, the church officially organized with twenty-three members. Some of these initial members remain part of the congregation today. As the church expanded it needed a larger space. Rev. MacDonald and the members diligently worked to purchase a new property at 29 Halton Street.
Tragedy struck on May 2, 1992. The Pioneer and Pastor of West Toronto Church, Pastor MacDonald, passed away unexpectedly. The church was without a pastor for three and a half months.
Then came Rev. Dr. George S. Peart. He was selected as the new pastor. He and his wife, Mrs. Jireta Peart, took office on September 22, 1992. Under his leadership, the membership grew. Parking spaces became scarce. Rev. Peart and the council sought a new site. Despite many obstacles, Rev. Peart had a vision. He wanted to see it realized. They acquired property at 1655 Wilson Avenue in North York. This is where West Toronto Church of God currently resides. Rev. Dr. G.S. Peart served the church faithfully.
In August 2002, Bishop H.O. Wilson became the pastor. Before arriving here, he pastored Malton Church of God for 23 years. It is now New Life Covenant Centre. He also served as Administrative Bishop of the Church of God in Eastern Canada. Bishop Wilson spearheaded a major reconstruction project. This led to the church facilities you see today. Bishop Wilson and Mrs. Clementina Wilson served until June 26, 2015.
Bishop Wayne Vernon and Mrs. Yvonne Vernon succeeded them. They currently lead West Toronto Church. Bishop Wayne Vernon and Mrs. Yvonne Vernon are passionate about the community. They are taking steps to impact the surrounding neighborhoods and the wider city. Rev. Vernon has been an ordained Bishop of the Church of God since 1996. He has served in ministry capacities in Jamaica, The Cayman Islands, and Canada. Rev. Vernon is passionate about developing leaders in the body of Christ.
West Toronto Church of God offers many services. These include Sunday School, worship services, and various ministries. These ministries cater to women, men, and youth. They also host a Senior’s Club and a food drive. They dedicate children too. Their facilities support the ministry and outreach programs. They also serve the wider community.
From its humble origins with Rev. Clifford MacDonald to its current vibrant state under Bishop Wayne Vernon, West Toronto Church of God stands as a testament to faith, community, and unwavering commitment.
