Beneath the boughs of ancient trees lies a sanctuary of serenity. This is Saifukuji Temple. It is a venerable temple of the Jodo Sect of Buddhism. Ryonyo, a 14th-century priest, erected it.

Saifukuji Temple holds stories within its walls. These stories whisper of cultural treasures. Some treasures moved here from the capital during the Onin War. Many items are Important Cultural Properties.

Look around. Notice the shoin reception room. Yuki Hideyasu helped build it. He was the son of Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was also the lord of Fukui Castle.

The shoin garden stretches over 4,620 square meters. The Japanese government has designated the study hall garden as a place of scenic beauty. This garden represents paradise. It is known as the Pure Land. It shows the land of perfect bliss.

Imagine Ryonyo planting two Itajii trees. He planted them as provision against famine. They stand on opposite sides of the stone stairs. The male tree is on the right. The female tree is on the left. The female tree bears nuts each year.

Consider the yellow cherry blossoms. Matsudaira Tadanao donated them. He was the second lord of the Fukui domain. The originals came from Fukui Castle. The current blossoms are the third generation. Pale greenish-yellow double flowers bloom each year.

Saifukuji Temple’s garden is beautiful all year. It peaks in mid-November. The fall colors are stunning. The early morning sun illuminates the greenery. The colors create an otherworldly scene.

Walk through the temple grounds. Feel the history. Absorb the peace. Let the beauty of Saifukuji Temple inspire you. It is a testament to art. It is a testament to faith. It is a testament to nature’s splendor. Remember this sacred space.
