Komae is a city in the western part of Tokyo. It is the smallest city in Tokyo by both area and population. But do not let its size fool you. Komae has a rich and interesting history.
The name Komae may come from migrants from the Korean peninsula. These migrants, especially those from Goguryeo, settled here around the 5th century AD. Isn’t it fascinating how a place name can carry echoes of ancient migrations?
Originally, Komae was a farming village established in 1889. Komae became a crucial farming area. It helped the area become more efficient and well-known.
In 1893, Komae became part of the Tokyo Prefecture. In 1926, the Odakyu Railway’s Odawara line came to Komae. This connected Komae to Shinjuku in central Tokyo. This connection changed Komae forever.
Due to its growing population, Komae was upgraded to a town in 1952. Komae was officially designated a city on October 1, 1970. Just months later, disaster struck when the Tama River’s levee failed. Nineteen homes were destroyed by the flood. The riverbanks were strengthened. A small memorial marks the location of the levee failure.
Today, Komae is a residential suburb. Many residents commute to central Tokyo for work. The city still has neighborhood shopping areas. These are mainly around the train stations. The City Hall is near Komae Station.
Komae has a mayor-council government. Kunihiko Takahashi has been the mayor since 2012.
