Hear the echo of laughter ringing through the years. This is Baythorn Public School. We stand before a building steeped in history a testament to education and community spirit. Baythorn Public School opened its doors in 1967. Mr EJ Sand was the supervising principal. The school’s name comes from its location on Baythorn Drive.
Baythorn has always been a neighbourhood school. It serves a community whose student population has changed over time. This led to the school hosting various programs. In the early 1970s a Montessori program rented space here. Later a pioneering Alternative Education program found a home within Baythorn’s walls.
The late 1980s witnessed a transformative moment. Superintendent Jerry Diakiw envisioned a unique arts program. Principal Joe Lawless and Vice Principal Jean Duran collaborated with him. They brought this innovative arts-based program to life. Students from across York Region auditioned for a place. This program taught the curriculum using dance drama visual arts and music.
Today Baythorn Public School thrives. It serves both local students and those from all over York Region. The school offers programs from Junior Kindergarten to Grade Eight. The arts program welcomes students from Grades Five to Eight. The school’s mascot is the bear a powerful symbol. It represents strength fearlessness knowledge and inner strength. Baythorn’s colours are blue white and silver.
Baythorn Public School wasn’t always this large. The original building was much smaller. Many additions have been made over the years. These include a second floor a science lab dance and art studios a gymnasium and a computer lab. Even a classroom was converted into a drama studio complete with a stage.
Baythorn Public School continues to excel. It offers various programs including in-class resource support a Student Success Center an Empower program ESL and Reading Recovery. Field trips ongoing counseling a progressive discipline model and a student leadership program all contribute to a dynamic learning experience. The school also boasts a VIP program Character Education guest speakers workshops and numerous sports and clubs. Each student has the right to a safe and supportive learning environment. The school is committed to anti-racist and equity education.
