Can you picture a place named after a nickname? Chatswood’s story begins with Charlotte Harnett, nicknamed “Chattie.” Her husband, Richard Harnett, was the Mayor of Willoughby. The area, originally dense with trees, became known as “Chattie’s Wood.” This eventually evolved into the name we know today: Chatswood. Chatswood is a suburb on Sydney’s Lower North Shore, just 10 kilometers north of the Sydney central business district. It’s the administrative heart of the City of Willoughby. Residential life in Chatswood began in 1876. The arrival of the North Shore railway line in 1890 and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932 fueled its growth. Imagine Chatswood in the early 1900s. Trams rattled along Willoughby Road and Penshurst Street. Orchards and dairy farms dotted the landscape west of the train station. Factories, like Dairy Farmers Inc and the Three Threes Pickle Factory, hummed along Gordon Road, now the Pacific Highway. Chatswood’s industrial past might surprise you. Remember the names Ferguson Lane and Caroma. They’re echoes of this era, named after Ferguson Transformers and the Caroma factory, respectively. In the east, along Scott’s Creek, tanneries operated until as recently as 1992. Some light industry still exists in this part of Chatswood. Chatswood’s transformation has been remarkable. From a wooded area to a town center in 1983 and then a city in 1989, it has constantly evolved. During the 1990s, Chatswood became a hub for Asian communities, shaping its vibrant cultural landscape. Today, Chatswood boasts a rich mix of cultures, primarily East Asian. It’s a major commercial and retail center on the North Shore, with a bustling atmosphere. Chatswood Chase and Westfield Chatswood dominate the retail scene. Smaller shopping centers like Mandarin Centre and Chatswood Place add to the mix. Chatswood is also a foodie paradise, especially for Asian cuisine. Every Thursday and Friday, the Chatswood Mall Markets come alive with food and craft stalls. Chatswood is easily accessible by train, metro, and bus, connecting it to various parts of Sydney.
