Standing here, you’re probably wondering about this tranquil space. What is Jozen-ji Temple? It’s a Buddhist temple that offers a serene escape.

Jozen-ji Temple stands as a testament to Tokyo’s rich history. It is a peaceful contrast to the city’s modern bustle. Now, let’s uncover the layers of history. We will explore the unique facets that make Jozen-ji Temple so special.

Zojoji Temple is impressive. It houses the tombs of six Tokugawa shoguns. This connects it deeply to Japan’s ruling elite during the Edo period. The temple was moved to its present location in 1598. This happened when Tokugawa Ieyasu, a warlord, entered Edo, now Tokyo.

Look at the Sangedatsumon gate. It is Zojoji Temple’s main gate. This imposing structure represents traditional Buddhist architecture. Remarkably, it’s the only temple structure that survived the bombings of World War II. This gate dates back to 1622. It is the oldest wooden building in Tokyo. “San” means “three”. “Gedatsu” means “Moksha”. Passing through this gate symbolizes freedom. It is a freedom from the three passions of greed, hatred, and foolishness.

Inside Zojoji Temple, you will find the Treasure Gallery. It opened in 2015. It displays works by the famous Buddhist scroll painter Kano Kazunobu. There is also a model of the Taitoku-in Mausoleum. This is where the Tokugawa shoguns are buried.

Next to the Treasure Gallery is a garden. It has rows of stone statues called jizo. These represent unborn children lost in childbirth, miscarriage, or abortion. Parents often visit. They decorate the statues with clothing and small toys. This eases the children’s journey into the afterlife.

Notice the temple’s location. Zojoji Temple is next to Tokyo Tower. This juxtaposition of traditional and modern creates a unique atmosphere. Zojoji Temple was once a huge complex. It covered 826000 square meters. It included 48 smaller attached temples. Today, the temple is smaller. Many buildings are reconstructions.

Six of the fifteen Tokugawa shoguns rest here. Their mausoleum was adorned with dragons. It was located at the back of the site. It was unfortunately damaged during World War II.

Also take note of the Sentai Kosodate Jizo Garden. Here, stone statues represent unborn children. Parents decorate these statues with clothing and toys. This provides comfort. It ensures the children’s safe passage to the afterlife.

Zojoji Temple has been featured in art. Utagawa Hiroshige depicted it in his “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo” series. Kawase Hasui also captured its beauty in his Shin hanga works.

Zojoji Temple is more than a historical site. It is an active center for the Jodo sect of Buddhism. It serves as a central seminary for priests and novices. The temple hosts annual events like Hatsumode, Setsubun, and the Buddha’s Birthday. It also holds monthly events like Sutra copying.

As you leave, remember Zojoji Temple. It is a place of history, spirituality, and art. It is a tranquil oasis amidst Tokyo’s vibrant energy.
