Whispering winds rustle through ancient oaks. Welcome to Mount Pleasant Cemetery a place where Toronto’s history unfolds. Established in 1876 Mount Pleasant wasn’t always a serene park-like setting. Before its opening deceased Torontonians not affiliated with the Church of England or the Roman Catholic Church had limited burial options within the city. This prompted a petition for a general burying ground. The land eventually became the Toronto General Burying Ground. In 1873 a new cemetery opened on a vast farm. It was a significant change. Mount Pleasant was designed by German landscape architect Henry Adolph Engelhardt. He drew inspiration from European and American garden cemeteries particularly Mount Auburn Cemetery in Boston. The result was a sprawling cemetery with miles of winding drives and walkways. The pathways meander through rolling hills and ponds. Statues fountains and botanical gardens enhance its beauty. Mount Pleasant became more than just a cemetery. It became a treasured Toronto landmark.

Its unique design wasn’t its only remarkable feature. Mount Pleasant is the final resting place for over 168000 people. Among them are prominent Canadians. Former Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King rests here. So does Jennie Smillie Robertson Canada’s first female surgeon. Renowned pianist Glenn Gould also finds his eternal rest within these grounds. The cemetery is home to many memorials. One commemorates the victims of the SS Noronic disaster. Another remembers the Empress of Ireland tragedy. A Children’s Garden Memorial stands for stillborn children and those without known parents. Mount Pleasant also serves as a poignant reminder of Canada’s military history. It holds 231 Commonwealth War Graves from World Wars I and II.

In 2009 Mount Pleasant opened a new visitation centre. The building provides ample space for services and private reflection. The building’s construction was not without controversy. Disputes with the city government funeral homes and the Ontario Municipal Board caused delays. The final design incorporated changes including altered vehicle access. Mount Pleasant’s history isn’t without its complexities. There have been disputes concerning its status as a public trust. Activist Margot Boyd and others challenged claims that Mount Pleasant had been converted to a private corporation. The controversy highlights the ongoing importance of preserving its legacy as a public asset.

Today Mount Pleasant Cemetery is a unique blend of history nature and remembrance. It is a place where the past and present converge.
