Was our solar system always this calm? Here at the Système solaire in Strasbourg, we’re standing on a miniature representation of our cosmic neighborhood. It might look peaceful now, but its birth was anything but. Imagine a swirling cloud of dust and gas, a nebula, the birthplace of our sun and planets. The Système solaire helps us visualize this grand cosmic ballet. About 4.567 billion years ago, our sun ignited, and the remaining material began to clump together. This early solar system was a chaotic place, a cosmic demolition derby. Planetesimals, the building blocks of planets, collided and merged, carving out their orbits through impacts and gravitational interactions. The planets themselves migrated, shifting their positions around the sun. Think of Jupiter, a giant among planets, large enough to contain all the other planets within it. Its gravitational pull sculpted the early solar system. Now, look at Mars, the red planet represented here in the Système solaire. It holds the scar of Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in our solar system, a testament to the intense geological activity of its past. And what about Saturn’s magnificent rings? They’re made of countless ice and rock particles, a dazzling display of cosmic beauty. Even Venus, Earth’s so-called twin, hides a hellish environment beneath its clouds, with scorching temperatures and crushing atmospheric pressure. Here at the Système solaire, we see a snapshot of this dynamic history. The Système solaire, a model of cosmic proportions, offers a glimpse into the violent birth and eventual stability of our solar system. It reminds us that even amidst apparent tranquility, the universe is constantly evolving, a story written in the orbits of planets and the whispers of ancient nebulae.
