Across the Canale di Mazzorbo lies Mazzorbetto. A name meaning “little Mazzorbo” in Italian it’s surprisingly the largest of this island group. Mazzorbetto is a quiet place mostly devoted to agriculture. Few people live here. Think of lush vineyards and orchards thriving in the Venetian sun.

Mazzorbetto shares a rich history with its neighbor Mazzorbo. Both were among the earliest settlements in the Venetian Lagoon. Long before Venice itself rose to prominence. Think back to the 9th to 14th centuries. These islands were bustling maritime trading centers. Connecting the Adriatic and Mediterranean.

But times changed. Venice’s growth eclipsed these smaller islands. Families sought the opportunities and safety of the larger city. Mazzorbetto and Mazzorbo suffered from environmental issues. Flooding eroded their shores. Malaria spread. The islands slowly became deserted.

Even in its decline Mazzorbetto held religious significance. Several monasteries and churches once stood here. Among them was the church of San Pietro. Its origins are lost to time. Tradition says that Saint Francis and Saint Antony once preached within its walls. Imagine the rich artistry it likely held. Gilded silver altarpieces adorned its interior. Sadly San Pietro was demolished during Napoleon’s occupation.

Another lost church is San Bartolomeo. Its history remains obscure. It merged with San Pietro. Then it was replaced by an oratory that was also eventually demolished. The San Matteo Monastery also existed on the island of Costanziaco before being relocated to Mazzorbetto.

Today Mazzorbetto is a tranquil reminder of Venice’s past. A testament to the ebb and flow of history. The tranquility speaks of resilience. A quiet beauty found in the agricultural landscape. The surviving elements whisper stories of a forgotten past. A place for reflection on Venice’s rich history.
