A field stone. That’s all that marks General Mikołaj Bołtuć’s final resting place here at the Powązki Military Cemetery. Yet this unassuming monument speaks volumes. It whispers tales of courage sacrifice and unwavering loyalty.

Before you stands a tribute to Brigadier General Mikołaj Bołtuć a pivotal figure in Polish military history. Born in Saint Petersburg in 1893 his life was a whirlwind of conflict and unwavering commitment to his nation. He was a son of Ignacy Bołtuć a General in the Russian Imperial Army of Polish noble descent. Young Mikołaj’s journey began in the Russian Cadet officers school in Omsk at the tender age of seven.

His military career spanned across empires and ideologies. He served with distinction in the Russian Imperial Army fighting in World War I and the Finnish Civil War. The Bolshevik Revolution forced a change of allegiance. He found himself in the White Russian Army before escaping Odessa during its evacuation commanding the last ship to leave.

Returning to Poland he joined the Polish military. He rose through the ranks. He commanded units near Kamieniec Podolski and defended Zamość during the Soviet-Polish War of 1920. His bravery was evident during the defense of Zamość and the capture of Wyszków. Despite his exceptional skills and clear judgment his promotion to General was delayed for years. His anti-religious views and skepticism towards Poland’s military spending played a role.

World War II cast a long shadow. General Bołtuć commanded an Operation Group within Army Pomorze. His unit was the only Polish unit to briefly enter German territory in East Prussia during the September Campaign. They withstood attacks from much larger German forces. Sadly the threat of being surrounded forced a retreat to Modlin. When the Modlin Fortress could only accommodate his officers he allowed his soldiers to demobilize but many refused to leave his side. He inspired volunteers to join him in a desperate attempt to break through the German siege of Warsaw. Before leaving home he famously stated This is not the war we are going to win and I am not the kind of soldier who would surrender.

On September 22 1939 near Łomianki his life ended. Sniper fire claimed him as he led a charge. His death was a tragic loss but his legacy remains. Thousands of his soldiers rest near Łomianki but General Bołtuć’s grave stands here at Powązki. This simple field stone is a testament to a remarkable man. His unwavering courage and selfless dedication are an inspiration to us all. His story reminds us of the sacrifices made for freedom and the enduring spirit of the Polish nation.
