Beneath our feet lies a tapestry of stories woven into the very soil of Mawson Park. This green oasis in Campbelltown’s heart has been a silent witness to the area’s evolution. In 1820 Governor Lachlan Macquarie named the area Campbelltown after his wife Elizabeth’s maiden name.

Mawson Park offers a perfect meeting place today. It is a recreational spot and a picnic area for all. It is easily accessible and a short walk from Campbelltown Station.

But Mawson Park wasn’t always known by that name. Until 1938, it was simply “The Green”. Imagine this space filled with cricket matches. Picture carnivals and community gatherings. Mawson Park even served a darker purpose in the early 1800s. It was a site for hangings.

The park’s name changed to honour Dr. William Mawson. He was a well-regarded local doctor and brother to the famous explorer Sir Douglas Mawson. Think of the connection. One brother charting unknown territories of Antarctica. The other caring for the community right here.

Take a moment to appreciate the landscape. Mawson Park is filled with native and exotic plants. Colourful trees surround us. No matter the season, something is always in bloom. The park is well-manicured with winding paths. Children’s laughter fills the air from the playground. Memorials and historical monuments are scattered around the area.

Notice St Peter’s Anglican Church. This beautiful building towers over Mawson Park. It was built in 1823 by Francis Lawless. It is believed to be Campbelltown’s oldest building. Adjacent to the church is a cemetery. Many historical figures rest here including Dr. William Mawson and Frederick Fisher.

At the other end of Mawson Park stands the old Campbelltown Court House. It opened in 1889. This stands on the site of a previous courthouse built in 1827.

Mawson Park is more than just a park. It is a place where history, community, and nature converge. The park is used for formal ceremonies. Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services are held here. Wedding photos are often taken here as well. Mawson Park is a tranquil place to sit and enjoy a picnic. Take a moment to breathe. Reflect on the stories held within Mawson Park.
