Forest Hill United Church

Forest Hill United Church started not with a grand vision of bricks and mortar, but with a simple plea from young families. As the shadow of World War II loomed large, these families yearned for a place where their children could find solace and hope. They petitioned the United Church of Canada to establish a Sunday school, a beacon of light in a world consumed by darkness. In 1940, their dreams materialized. A modest building was erected, and on September 8th, the first service was held. The sanctuary lacked pews and an organ, but it overflowed with the spirit of togetherness. Forest Hill United Church was officially born. In the early years, a large synagogue was built nearby. The neighbourhood demographics shifted. The plans to replace the original chapel with a grander structure were abandoned. Forest Hill United Church embraced its intimate nature. The church chose to remain small, fostering a close-knit community where everyone knew each other’s names, where visitors were welcomed with open arms, and where members cared for one another in times of need. This sense of belonging has become a defining characteristic of Forest Hill United Church. Over the decades, Forest Hill United Church has blossomed into a multicultural tapestry. Its congregation represents a vibrant mix of cultures and backgrounds, from Africa and the Caribbean to China and the Philippines. The church proudly celebrates Black History Month and Asian Heritage Month, embracing diversity as a source of strength and enrichment. At Forest Hill United Church, belief is a journey, not a destination. The church encourages questions and embraces diverse perspectives. The minister’s sermons are known for their thought-provoking nature, peppered with question marks that invite reflection and dialogue. The church welcomes individuals to bring their whole selves into worship, their doubts and struggles as well as their joys and triumphs. Forest Hill United Church offers a range of programs for all ages. From September to June, children can participate in Church School, led by a certified Early Childhood Educator. Childcare is provided for younger children. A youth group engages teenagers. A choir fills the sanctuary with music, rehearsing every Sunday morning. Study groups delve into various topics, fostering intellectual and spiritual growth. The church buzzes with activity. Dinners, coffee houses, rummage sales, and special events bring people together, creating lasting bonds of friendship and fellowship.
