In the heart of Warsaw, a modernist marvel rises. The Cedet building stands as a testament to a city’s resilience and ambition. Cedet has witnessed Warsaw’s transformation through the decades. Let’s journey back to 1952. Imagine Warsaw, still bearing the scars of war. Amidst the rebuilding efforts, a beacon of modernity emerges. The Cedet, originally the Central Department Store (Centralny Dom Towarowy, or CDT), opens its doors. Designed by Zbigniew Ihnatowicz and Jerzy Romański, its sleek modernist style contrasted sharply with the prevailing socialist realism of the time. Its innovative glass facade, framed in Polish oak and featuring an anti-reflective coating, was a marvel of post-war architecture. Inside, escalators whisked shoppers between floors, a novelty in post-war Warsaw. The Cedet quickly became a social hub, a symbol of progress and a source of pride for the city. But tragedy struck in 1975. A fire, believed to have started from a faulty escalator motor, ravaged the Cedet. The flames danced across the upper floors, fueled by carpets, fabrics, and the very materials that once made the store so vibrant. The fire left the Cedet gutted. The city mourned the loss. But like Warsaw itself, the Cedet was destined to rise again. The building was reconstructed, although the cost-cutting measures of the 1970s meant some of its original glory was lost. It reopened, no longer as CDT but as “Smyk,” a children’s store. For decades, it served generations of Warsaw’s children. But the Cedet’s story doesn’t end there. In 2011, a new chapter began. The building was purchased by Immobel, a Belgian developer, with a vision of restoring the Cedet to its former glory. This was no easy task. The building’s historical significance meant that the renovation had to be meticulous, balancing modernization with preservation. The result is the Cedet you see today. A stunning blend of old and new, it once again stands proud as a symbol of Warsaw’s enduring spirit. The neon spirals and “CDT” letters, once lost to the flames, have been painstakingly recreated. The Cedet, once a department store, now houses a mix of retail and office space. It is a reminder that even in the face of destruction, hope and innovation can prevail. It is a symbol of Warsaw’s ability to reinvent itself while honoring its past.
