Once upon a time, an epidemic swept through the Kanto region. This led to the founding of Nishiarai Daishi. Kobodaishi sought to ease the suffering of the people. He created a statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon.

Nishiarai Daishi stands as Adachi City’s largest Buddhist temple. Locals affectionately call it Nishiarai Daishi. Once known as Gochisan Henjoin Sojiji the name evolved over time. Today it is a Buzan branch of Shingon Buddhism. It ranks among the Kanto region’s three prominent temples.

Kobodaishi also known as Kukai played a pivotal role. Born in Kagawa prefecture in 774 he mastered Chinese culture and Buddhism. He journeyed to the Kanto region witnessing widespread illness.

Moved by the plight of the people Kobodaishi crafted a wooden statue. It featured the Eleven-Faced Kannon incorporating his image. He made a well in parched land and started a 21-day fire-offering prayer. Miraculously water sprung forth purifying the afflicted. Thus the temple earned its name Nishiarai Daishi meaning a new well in the west.

Within Nishiarai Daishi’s grounds visitors discover many captivating features. The temple has 21 notable spots. These include the Niomon Gate and the Shio Jizo statue. You can also find the Botan Kannon and the Dainichi Nyorai. There is a water cleansing pavilion and Mizuarai Jizo too. An incense burner the Main Hall and the Jizo of unborn children. The Komyoden close to Daishimae Station hosts the Daruma Kuyo ceremony. People offer thanks to old Daruma dolls for blessings. They replace them with new ones burning the old.

The Niomon Gate serves as Nishiarai Daishi Temple’s main entrance. It showcases beautiful artistry. The Nio protectors Agyo and Ungyo stand guard.

The Main Hall is Nishiarai Daishi’s most prominent structure. It is a place for prayer and offerings. Visitors enjoy panoramic views of the temple.

East of the Main Hall various monuments await. The Thirteen-story Pagoda and the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage replica stand out. The healing deity Shio Jizo attracts devotees.
