Imagine Tokyo in 1942. A new company emerged amid the throes of World War II. That company was Hino Motors. Today we stand before a testament to its enduring legacy.

Hino Motors is more than just a manufacturer. It is a cornerstone of Japan’s commercial vehicle industry. Hino specializes in diesel trucks and buses. The company’s headquarters are located here in Hino, Tokyo.

Let’s dive into the story of Hino Motors. Its origins trace back to 1910. The Tokyo Gas Industry Company was founded. It later became Tokyo Gas and Electric Industry. They produced their first motor vehicle in 1917. It was the Model TGE A-Type truck.

In 1942, Hino Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. was spun off. This was from Diesel Motor Industry Co. Ltd. After World War II, Hino shifted its focus. It concentrated on heavy-duty trailer trucks and buses. The company officially became Hino Industry Co. Ltd.

In 1948, Hino split into two entities. There was Hino Diesel Industry Co. Ltd. Then there was Hino Diesel Sales. The 1950s saw innovation. Hino introduced the TH10 heavy-duty truck. In 1952, the B10/30 Blue Ribbon bus debuted. It featured a European-style forward-control cabin. This was a first for Japanese manufacturers.

Hino even dabbled in passenger cars. In 1961, they launched the Contessa 900 sedan. It had a rear-mounted engine. They also created the Hino Briska pickup truck.

The company officially adopted the name Hino Motors Ltd. in 1959. By 1963, the Hamura factory was up and running.

The 1960s brought financial challenges. In 1966, Hino partnered with Toyota. Hino became an affiliate. It focused on truck and bus production.

The 1970s saw Hino increase exports. By the end of the decade, export sales surpassed domestic sales. In 1981, Hino introduced the Profia truck. It boasted improved aerodynamics and a new cabin.

In 2001, Toyota increased its ownership of Hino. Hino became a subsidiary of Toyota. This solidified the company’s position in the automotive world.

Today, Hino Motors continues to innovate. It adapts to changing times. It has plants across Japan. They produce a variety of vehicles and components. The Koga plant produces medium and heavy trucks. The Nitta plant focuses on engines and transmissions. The Hamura plant handles lighter trucks.

Hino also has a global presence. It has manufacturing facilities in the United States. It assembles trucks in West Virginia. It produces parts in Arkansas. Hino trucks are sold and assembled worldwide.

As we stand here, remember the journey of Hino Motors. It is a story of resilience and innovation. It evolved from humble beginnings to a global leader. Hino Motors continues to drive the future of commercial vehicles.
