What if a simple question could save a life? Here at the Don Ritchie Plaque, we remember a man who proved that it could. The Don Ritchie Plaque commemorates a true local hero. Donald Ritchie, affectionately known as the “Angel of The Gap,” resided across from a notorious suicide spot in Sydney known as The Gap. Don Ritchie wasn’t a police officer or a counselor. He was a former Navy veteran and insurance salesman who noticed people in distress on the cliffs. His response was simple yet profound. Whenever he saw someone struggling, he would approach them with a gentle question: “Can I help you in some way?” This simple act of human connection, this offer of help, was often enough to pull someone back from the brink. Don Ritchie saved at least 180 lives. His family believes the actual number is closer to 500. He would invite those he helped back to his home for a cup of tea and a chat. Some returned years later to thank him for saving their lives. Don Ritchie received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2006 for his service. He was also named Citizen of the Year in 2010 and Local Hero for Australia in 2011. The Don Ritchie Plaque, located in Gap Park, serves as a reminder of the power of compassion and the potential we all have to make a difference. It also bears a quote from Don himself: “Always remember the power of the simple smile, a helping hand, a listening ear, and a kind word.” Don Ritchie passed away in 2012 at the age of 85. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. He showed us that even in the darkest of moments, a simple act of kindness can offer a lifeline of hope.
