How about stepping into a world where the city fades and nature embraces? Right here at Entrada Núcleo Pedra Grande, that transformation begins. It marks an entry point into a realm of green. This is not just any park. It’s a significant piece of the Mata Atlântica.
Entrada Núcleo Pedra Grande is your gateway to the Parque Estadual da Cantareira. Cantareira is one of the world’s largest urban forests. Imagine a place where you can hike through trails. Picture yourself surrounded by the sounds of nature. You are surprisingly close to the city’s heart.
Cantareira got its name centuries ago. Tropeiros used the mountains. They were traveling between São Paulo and other regions. They named it for the many springs and streams. They stored water in clay pots called cântaros. The shelves holding these pots were called Cantareira.
The Parque Estadual da Cantareira is huge. It spans nearly 8000 hectares. That is land in four municipalities. Most of the park lies north of São Paulo. The park includes Guarulhos, Mairiporã, and Caieiras too.
Entrada Núcleo Pedra Grande opened in 1989. It was the first part of the park open to the public. It offers direct contact with the Mata Atlântica. It is surprisingly close to Praça da Sé. That is only 10 km away as the crow flies. The administrative headquarters of the park are within the Núcleo Pedra Grande. This makes it a primary visitor center.
Within Entrada Núcleo Pedra Grande, choose from four trails. Each trail offers a unique experience.
The Trilha das Figueiras is 1200 meters long. Expect a medium difficulty hike that takes about an hour. You’ll see large fig trees. These trees give the trail its name. You might spot monkeys eating fruit. Keep an eye out for granite rocks.
The Trilha da Bica stretches 1500 meters. The difficulty is easy. It takes around 40 minutes. The trail circles a small watershed. Refresh yourself at the water source. Watch for birds and coatis.
The Trilha do Bugio is short. It is only 300 meters. This is an easy 15-minute walk. It is perfect for children and those with physical disabilities. Look for the bugio monkeys.
The Trilha Pedra Grande is challenging. It extends 6780 meters. Plan for a 3-hour hike. The trail leads to panoramic views of São Paulo. On clear days you can see the Serra do Mar.
The park is home to endangered species. The bugio monkey and gato-do-mato live here. The jaguatirica also calls this home.
Plants like imbuia and canela-preta are protected.
The park has an entrance fee. As of April 2023, it costs R$ 50. Students and others get a discount.
The park is open Wednesday through Sunday. Hours are 8 am to 5 pm.
To get here by car, use Rua do Horto, 1799. Several bus lines also serve the park.
Entrada Núcleo Pedra Grande is more than just a park entrance. It’s a starting point. It’s the beginning of a journey. A journey into nature. A journey into the heart of the Mata Atlântica. It is waiting here for you.
