Hidden atop a high slope in Prague 8, Libeň, sits Rokoska, a manor house with a story as intriguing as its architecture. Rokoska isn’t just any building. It’s a time capsule, a silent observer of centuries of change. The original structure dates back to 1629. But the Rokoska we see today largely reflects its Rococo makeover in the late 18th century. Prokop Gindle, the owner at the time, oversaw this transformation. Some sources, however, attribute the redesign to Prague builder J. Štembera. Imagine the surrounding vineyards, later unified into a single expanse. These grounds witnessed a shift from aristocratic leisure to a more practical purpose. After 1836, J. Lendecke purchased Rokoska and converted it into a sugar factory. By 1890, it had transitioned again, this time into a poorhouse. Rokoska continued to evolve with the needs of the community. In 1903, the city of Prague acquired the manor. They established a municipal educational institution within its walls. As the institution grew, so did the need for more space. An expansion project began in 1907, east of the original manor house. This new building eventually housed the entire educational program. Rokoska itself remains an architectural gem. It stands as a testament to the Rococo style, its rectangular form capped with a large triangular pediment, complete with a sundial. A quadrilateral turret crowns the mansard roof. The northern facade is particularly ornate, featuring charming bow windows. A central rizalit with arcades, also topped with a triangular pediment, adds to its unique charm. Designated a cultural monument in 1964, Rokoska proudly displays its rich history. It reminds us of the constant evolution of places and the stories they hold.
